PICK- 4 is the
form of pari-mutuel wagering whereby you select in order the winners of four
consecutive races, placing your bet before the first race in the set of four
goes off. Many tracks offer multiple Pick-4 wagering opportunities every day.
For example, races 1-2-3-4 might be the first Pick-4, followed by the set of races
2-3-4-5, then 3-4-5-6, then 4-5-6-7, and so on.
HOW TO READ THE CHART:
This is, obviously, an abbreviated chart, displayed here to give you an idea of
how the cost of the wager increases as you as add more horses in each race. The
betting unit used is $1, so 16 = $16, 81= $81, etc.
For
example, let's say you want to play 1 horse each of the four races. Your total bet cost is $1.
If you want to play 3 horses in each race, your total bet is $81. If you played
5 horses in each race, your total bet would be $625.

The Easy Way to Calculate Your
Own Pick-4 Bet Cost
Naturally, if you play the Pick-4, your
handicapping may be such that you'll want to play different numbers of
horses in each race, rather than always playing 1, or 2, or 3, or
however many you think you need to use in each race.
Using $1 as the base betting unit, here's
how to calculate the total number of bets and the total cost.
Just multiply the number of horses you want to
play in each race:
-
2 horses x 2 horses x 3 horses x 4 horses
= 48 bets = $48
-
1 horse x 3 horses x 1 horse x 5 horses =
15 bets = $15
-
3 horses x 3 horses x 1 horse x 4
horses = 36 bets = $36
